Car Hire Excess Insurance

Postby johnm40 » 29 May 2015 18:02

You arrive to pick up your car at the hire desk. The smiling agent suggests you take out their insurance to cover the collision and theft excess?
Some desks have a warning notice in your language to press the point.

If you have an accident, or the car is stolen you will be charged the policy excess, the rental policy normally includes this notice:

IMPORTANT INFO
As per rental agreement you are responsible for any damage or theft. Your rate includes Collision Damage Waiver (Excess Applies) and Theft Protection (Excess Applies), so your responsibility in case of damage or theft is limited to an excess amount from €1100 to €4000 in case of damage and from €1700 to €4000 in case of theft. These amounts vary according to driven car and will be communicated at time of pick up, when you can also buy our SUPER COVER to CANCEL your damage and theft excess.

At this point panic sets in as the prospect of a debit of up to 4000 euros if you have an accident!

Now comes the hard sell........We have a Super Cover Excess Waiver policy. for only 27.98 euros per day (Hertz Rentacar) you can have complete peace of mind and avoid any excess charges for both accident or theft! Shall I add the cost to your credit card sir?..........:dur:

STOP!!!!!!!!!

You can purchase a policy, on-line before you travel, to cover unlimited car hirings over a 12 month period from http://www.travelsupermarket.com/c/cheap-car-hire/buying-car-hire-excess-insurance/........the cost £35.99 including all taxes.

Just show your policy document at any hire desk in the Uk or Mainland Europe and politely decline their offer! :niceday:

Or don't use the airport rip off car hire but use our local one Wheels in Spain. We used them back in February, no excessive extra insurance, no charge for petrol, and they were there to greet us. Excellent service and very good prices. And they are local.
We got them from a recommendation on the old forum and will use them again.

Hi Jacton, good posting about hiring here in Alicante or San Javier airports.

My posting was aimed at hiring a vehicle in the UK, or elsewhere.

See also my posting about Driving Licence changes this month, again mainly for those hiring in the UK :niceday:
